THE FABBRICA DEL VAPORE LABS presents: POSTI DI VISTA 08
On the occasion of the 47¡ã Salone Internazionale del Mobile

April 2008, from the 16th to the 21th
14 design events interpreted and expressed through the language of different disciplines: architecture, design, photography, multimedia, video, dance and contemporary art. This fifth edition underlines the connecting role that the Fabbrica del Vapore laboratories play between the world of training and the world of work, in terms of experimentation and avant-garde applied to various sectors.

¡°The Human Dream Tower¡±
This year we are continuing the creative path collaborating with some Milan schools, Settimo Torinese, with an
Informagiovani Center of San Vito al Tagliamento, with the children of our Ludoteca and Fuorilegio (Rome). The project is called The Human Dream Tower. Creative communication between people who inhabit the same building. 4 laboratories will realise 4 models representing residential "places", each one created by 4 communicating towers with walkways: every "intersection¡± will have a themed square (art, gardening, playing and meditation). 4 creative performances will be realised in 4 parts of the city, entitled Rap (Rainbow Art Point): anyone bringing an old piece of furniture will be able to coat it in Polimat (non-toxic multicoloured granules). Three evenings of the Rap are scheduled, the 16th-18th-21st of April.

¡°Colorshion GENERIX: mix design lab show¡±
COLORSHION is a performance installation created in collaboration with students of design, and fashion design of IED in Milan, co-ordinated by Ariella Vidach and Claudio Prati. The installation combines in a single project, fashion, theatre, dance, music, digital art, design, architecture and communication, interpreting the recent trend to create works that reject rigid classifications. Visitors can take part in the chromatic composition of the objects exhibited in the installation to activate (with the help of interactive software developed by AIEP association) sounds and text sentences proposing a revision of the functions of the objects in our daily lives. The proposal fits within the GENERIX initiative, promoted by the Association to support and enhance youth creativity, offering productive residences enabling interdisciplinary technological experimentation.

¡°ECAL/Nicolas Le Moigne in collaboration with Eternit¡±
Developed as a master¡¯s degree project at the Ecole cantonale d¡¯art de Lausanne (ECAL), the objects were realised in close partnership with the Eternit company. Intended for outdoor use, these small-scale furnishings and objects (a stool, a side table and flowerpots) make consistent use of the structural and design properties of the material. A major emphasis of the project was on the development of suitable forms that would enable the objects to be serially produced. Numerous experiments with different materials and techniques finally resulted in the creation of the first prototypes.

Laboratorio DAGAD Architecture & Industrial Design Research Centre
¡°Use More/Use Less¡±
Laboratory DAGAD with ANAB, proposes a meeting on the theme of RE-USE. The initiative intends to emphasize the greater environmental value of re-use compared to the re-cycle and to reinterpret the trilogy behind eco-design in a new light: RE-USE, RE-THINK AND RE-QUALIFICATION. DAGAD proposes to companies of key importance in the design field to choose a designer in whom to entrust a re-use project of a product with the objective of obtaining a new usage characterised by levels of quality, functionality and aesthetics similar to the original object. The task is to find a new role for an object that has been designed for a specific use, integrating it into another quality product, stretching in this way the objects life and at the same time decreasing the volume of dismissed items. The prototypes will be presented next year. This year companies involved in the project will be highlighted, with an overview of design examples to clarify the meaning of re-use interpreted in a qualitative way.

Macchinazioniteatrali Performative Arts
¡°Mosca (cent mille milliards de lumi¨¨res)¡±
For the occasion of Posti di Vista 08 and of their official entrance into Fabbrica del Vapore, MacchinazioniTeatrali proposes MOSCA, a freeware project of a self constructed technical light that can be self supporting, wall mounted and hooked.
The project is distributed accompanied with mounting instructions and links for component purchases.
MOSCA was born from twenty-years of experience in lighting that marked the path of MacchinazioniTeatrali becoming one of the distinctive elements in every theatrical and stage performance. Placed in a scenic area in the process of destruction and reconstruction MOSCA is the metaphor (in its genesis) of the combined action in which human kind delights itself, deliberately unconscious of the naturalness of this action and of the collective ownership of the outcome.
In this fierce advance towards creation it fails to recall the rubble of history that the same creation produces,
leaving on the table, unexpressed opportunities with their own part of rubble.

Mascherenere Visual Arts
¡°RECYCL-ART¡±
The Mascherenere association proposes an 'exhibit of the Senegalese artist Moussa Traore, who defines himself as an
environmental sculptor. His productions, from 1985 to today, have dealt with issues concerning environmental protection and recycling of waste. An internationally recognized artist thanks to works realised with the recovery of materials that belong to the sphere of useless. His production capacities and his ability to renew the ancient language of re-use, focuses the attention on the contrast of consumeristic logic of disposable and have the ambition to sensitize the public about the protection of the natural environment which is an absolute necessity. Capital for the quality of life of present and future generations.

¡°Notebook Numero Zero"
Relationships between creative categories have often got closer and further away giving space for sudden cultural and not pre-formed movements: in recent years we are witnessing a renewed relationship between visual art and industrial design, crafts and architecture. The reasons are not yet decipherable but it is interesting to note how this alliance is bringing new aesthetic relationships to Europe, the United States and Italy. Notebook numero zero, edited by Michela Arfiero and Daniela Lotta, conducts an investigation in the Italian territory of contemporary artistic research, presenting the works and projects of some of the most interesting artists of the emerging generation, highlighting specific characteristics with the intention to demonstrate how nowadays it is no longer possible to establish boundaries within which to place the two different disciplines, and underlining, on the contrary, how the attention to the solicitation of different aesthetic components interests both the situations.

ONEOFF - Industreal Design Research
¡°Industreal Overture¡± with Ionna Vautrin and Guillaume Delvigne
An introduction to the work of Ionna Vautrin and Guillaume Delvigne who from the very beginning have shared in the research of Industreal and they have dedicated a significant part of their poetry to the material of creativity, porcelain.
An Overture because in all effects, an opening, a beginning which promises new developments, new initiatives.

Industreal ¡°Let There Be Light¡± with The School of The Art Institute of Chicago
Light is made of the same material from which ideas are made.
In proposing concepts of light developed by the students of The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) Industreal reflects (another luminous terminology) on the shape of light be it direct or reflected.

¡°18% Gray¡± The School of The Art Institute of Chicago
While light and its absence are everyday phenomena, the students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) treat the matter of light as a tangible and formable substance¡ªan extraordinary material for design exploration. The result of their experimentation is 18%GRAY, which will be presented at the Fabbrica del Vapore, during FuoriSalone 2008.
Light is filtered through artifacts and discrete constructions to produce zones of edited brightness and shadow, of measure and effect. Illumination is used to transform and reveal the inherent beauty of everyday materials. 18%GRAY demonstrates the power of design to coax the sublime from the commonplace.

¡°Quotidiano Manifesto 2008¡±
This year will explore the relationship that the object can establish with the context. It will be in the form of an audio visual media and will present objects in changing contexts. For the first time this research will see the involvement of students of the Itsos Albe Steiner Superior School in Milan, which is recognised for being an experimental institute in the field of communication.

Process Creative Research
¡°2¡Ý3D Surface Xplorations¡±
Process presents "2¡Ý3D": a contemporary collection of tapestries exploring the environmental relationship between two and three dimensions. Surfaces of design, structured, tactile and composed manually, through the combined arrangement of modular forms and materials. In addition, Process will exhibit a selection of "expressive surfaces" created by students from the 2nd year of graphic design at the Academy of Communication in Milan.

SHOW BIZ Visual Communications
¡°IL GIRO DEL MONDO IN 80 CENTIMETRI¡± video, durata 20¡¯
Design: indicates all the research, creation and development, for the realization of any product (wikipedia). An extreme form of design is the one that takes place within the walls of a cell, where manual ability is combined with ingenuity in the design of everyday objects for the satisfaction of basic needs. But not only that: the idea was born from the will to recount life in prison and the passing of time starting from the spaces, objects, small habits, the rituals of living together, the furniture, the food, the different religions. A journey through the cooking utensils, the curtains to hide, the silences, the steps, the inventions to survive. A priority of the project is to work with prisoners, both in male and female wards, in the design phase and the shooting of the short.

Studio Azzurro Video Creation
¡°Sostenendo le stelle¡±
Studio Azzurro presents " Sostenendo le stelle " ideal continuation of " L¡¯alba a mezzanotte ", the waiting event realised last year, to be held in the evening of the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th of April, from 21.00, at The Fabbrica del Vapore at "Posti di Vista 08" and at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. The transversal body of the Fabbrica del Vapore - the cathedral - a fascinating building of Industrial archaeology of the beginning of the last century, will be lit before its final restoration.
A luminous architectural tribute to underline the naked structures: beams of the roof, brick arches, the hollow windows. The event is expected to be magnificent, a shimmer similar to that of religious celebrations, but at the same time light, mild, of pedagogical "waiting": learn to watch and regain consciousness of things and places.
